Adirondack Chairs - How to Choose One
December 31, 2009
In Blue Mountain Lake, New York, you will find a unique museum called the Adirondack Museum. According to the experts that run this museum, the Adirondack chair was originally called the Westport chair, named after a small town located nearby Adirondack Mountains. The design of the chair was first created back in 1900 by Thomas Lee. On a mission of designing a chair that could be used indoors or outdoors and one that was overly comfortable, he began his work, using standard boards and nails.
After creating his prototype, he asked family and friends to see what they thought and while the Adirondack chair does not look like the most comfortable choice of chairs, they were surprised that it was actually quite comfy. Today, the Adirondack chair remains a popular choice often associated with beachfront houses, big sprawling lawns, or screened patios. However, the Adirondack chair makes a wonderful addition to any home or yard.
The style of slated boards and the big wide armrest are what made Adirondack chairs well known and that style remains popular today. The armrest is especially nice in that it is wide and angled so you can easily set down a cup of coffee or glass of lemonade while relaxing in the shade. The patent for the Adirondack chair was provided in 1904 and over the following 20 years, the manufacturer made several variations of this one style.
Organizing for the Single Parent

Organizing for the Single Parent
by: Marc Rifkin
One of the trickiest organizing situations is the cluttered, one parent family. Often, the story goes something like this: The house is cluttered. Perhaps not cluttered enough to qualify for a TV makeover show, but cluttered enough to cause friction among the family members. Mom tries to keep the home organized, but is overwhelmed. Toys are everywhere, and every surface is covered with stacks of paper, mail, dishes, and other assorted items. In short, the place looks like a typical “before” photo. Everybody is blaming everybody, the tension is rising, and nobody knows what to do. With nowhere else to turn, mom calls or emails me, requesting my help ASAP.
In these situations, common wisdom says that the decluttering process should start with (a) the most important or central room/area, or (b) the room/area that is causing the greatest stress. Whether it’s the family room, TV room, or kitchen, a high-traffic common area seems like the logical place to begin. And sometimes, the client & I do agree to begin there.

Radiant Heat And Ceramic Floor Tile
by: Larry B Lang
If you have radiant heat and are planning a ceramic floor tile installation, then understanding the function of membranes will certain be beneficial. This article will teach you about various membranes in conjunction with radiant heat, so that your floor tile installation will be done properly.
There have been many tragic ceramic floor tile installation disasters by using the wrong membranes or none at all. If the membranes and/or bonding mortars are not compatible your bond will be lost and problems will occur.
With a floor tile installation make sure your membranes meet current ANSI standards and that manufacturers instructions are followed properly.
With floor tile installations, membranes are used for a variety of reasons, each having a specific purpose, such as moisture vapor emission membranes, cork underlay, peel and stick membranes and liquid or trowel applied membranes.
A load bearing, bonded, uncoupling membrane is also a full coverage membrane, but it’s made of thicker material than the anti-fracture membrane. The air cavities that are pressed into its surface allow for lateral movement.
Selecting Outdoor Benches
December 28, 2009
Outdoor benches are an excellent way to enhance a garden, create additional seating in a backyard or add a resting spot for a business. With outdoor benches, you will discover a huge selection of materials such as stone, wood, concrete, brick, etc. Keep in mind that one type of material is not necessarily better than another with a few exceptions. As an example, if you choose something like granite, marble, stone, or concrete, the seats will be hard so if you are looking to provide a comfortable resting area, cushions would be required. In addition, some types of wood do better than others. Teak, redwood, beech, birch, cherry, ash, maple, oak, mahogany, poplar, walnut, pecan, and cedar are excellent choices for outdoors.
Since wood outdoor benches are the most popular, we will address those in particular for this article. First, wood is easy to work with, offers a warm, rich, and inviting appearance, and is very durable. Depending on the design of the outdoor bench, it may or may not be made with a combination of solid wood and veneer. Regardless of the type of wood being used, the quality of construction for the outdoor bench is crucial. First, the outdoor bench needs to be made using the best joint method and second, the outdoor bench must be stable and sturdy.

Glass Deck Railings - Where Class Should Be Visible
by: Adam Peters
Add Sparkle To Space - Use Glass Railings
Glass railings with some transparency and a lot reflection from glass can create a different kind of atmosphere to a place that has been lit up brightly. If you see a Dubai gold mart for example, you will be able to see lot of glass railing in market. The well-lit mart becomes alive with reflection from gold and the use of glass everywhere, including the railings, accentuates the feeling of fun of shopping. The complete reflection from all surfaces adds to the glitter of gold there. If you use wood or any other railings there, the effect will not be as electric.
Customized Solutions - Glass Railings
Glass railings are never available as ready made material that can be cut and fitted as required. When you wish to use glass railings, the idea is to accentuate the atmosphere of the whole place and hence you may have to consider the all the factors including the lighting. The holistic approach has to be applied to the whole place rather than just fitting the glass railings.

Selecting A Canopy
by: John Rivers
A canopy can add a touch of sophistication as well as provide shelter from the elements. A canopy should provide optimum shade and also be a stylish extension your living space. A canopy can help you create your very own outdoor room. There is a wide choice of colours, styles and models to choose from so that your canopy will be a perfect feature for your garden. Whether you want it to be an eye-catching feature or to blend in with the rest of your house and garden there is bound to be one that suits your tastes.
A canopy has to be designed and built to cope with the demands of life outdoors. It needs to be tough and stable to ensure that it will look great for years to come - no matter what the weather. A canopy needs to have strong frames and should have casings manufactured from heavy-duty aluminium that will not bend, twist or buckle during operation. The finish should be highly resistant to cracking, chipping and peeling. Experienced canopy makers have used extensive research to develop superior fabrics that resist fading and temperature extremes. A canopy should be coated with Teflon to make them stain resistant and have a regular anti-mildew treatment to reduce unsightly spots and markings. There are special water-resistant coatings available so your canopy can be used in wet weather too.

Useful Remodeling Ideas - BEFORE You Get Started!
by: Michael Johnson
Home remodeling can be done for function or just because the house needs a new look, or a combination of the two. The focus of home remodeling for most homeowners is usually the kitchen or the bathrooms because those are the rooms that add the most value to a home and can become outdated more quickly. Just as in fashion, home décor goes through fads, and typically if bathrooms and kitchens have not been remodeled for ten years or more, it’s obvious!
How many times have we heard the jokes about the ambitious do-it-yourself homeowner who starts project after project, only to stop in the middle and not finish any one of them? Usually the weekend warrior runs out of time, or perhaps money, or maybe he or she realizes that much more has been bitten off than can possibly be chewed. The results are evident - half-finished paintjobs that leave some walls in one color while others sport another; flooring has been exposed but never finished; kitchen cabinets are leaning against the wall yet will not be anchored in for weeks or perhaps months. Sadly, many a homeowner neglected to receive some sound remodeling tips prior to embarking on their tasks. To this end, here are some tips and tricks that will you to get off to a good start, before you actually pick up your checkbook or your tools!
