To Picket Fences
February 28, 2009
Of the 359 homeowners in my area, 112 are running afoul of the law in a deviously blatant way by committing the heinous “fence offence;” in other words, breaching Los Angeles municipal code sections 12.21 and 12.22 which limit front yard fence and hedge height to a maximum 3 ˝ feet above grade. Now that’s a lot of criminal activity for one neighborhood.
With their pens and pads, my investigative team–three 17-year-old, out-of-work babysitters–scoured my neighborhood in search of scoundrels and found one very troublesome woman. This 74 year old widow named Barbara gave them a suspicious story about how her "charming wooden slats" were installed unknowingly by her otherwise law-abiding husband in 1987. My detectives measured the "offensive picket" at a full four feet -rather than the legal 3 ˝ — above grade.
When pressed, Barbara confessed that she had just received a letter from the L.A. City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo asking her to "appear for a City Attorney hearing to determine if a criminal complaint should be issued against (her)… for an alleged (fence) violation."
"It’s a stressful situation," Barbara says. "It makes me feel like a felon. Shouldn’t there be a statute of limitations on fences that have been in place for so long?"
Easy Renovations for Your Home
February 27, 2009
Renovating should be a fun and exciting process (really!). The key is to plan the project out in advance, hire the right people, allot the appropriate amount of time, and make provisions for delays. Try not to make the completion date coincide with your birthday or anniversary. Begin waaaay before that date, if you’re planning a special party, and even then, have an alternate location in mind.
Don’t impose a time frame on yourself or your contractor that will create stress. At the same time, get a clear understanding of how long the project will probably take, and when it will begin. If it’s a three month job and the work won’t begin until November, your house will not be ready for a New Year’s Party, unless you’re celebrating Chinese New Year? This is a surprisingly common problem ? how much time the home owner thinks a project will take and that actual work time required.
There are no Contractor Fairies (and I refer here to the magical ones! Ha,ha,ha!) who can slip in the middle of the night and have the project done by the morning, although that would be good! (I’m guessing that there’d be some really loud dance music, anyway, which would just keep you awake?!) Have your Contractor include a probable time frame with the quote.
How to Care for Your Outdoor Water Fountains
February 26, 2009
Garden lovers around the world love putting fountains among their flowers, plants, bushes and shrubs. And with the Christmas season upon us in the U.S., many garden lovers may get their very first fountain as a gift this year.
Fountains make wonderful gifts year round. They’re beautiful to look at, and fit well with almost any landscape. They’re also quite serene and have a wonderful calming effect. So if you’re getting or giving an outdoor water fountain for a gift this year, here are a few caretaking tips you’ll want to have on hand…
Many outdoor fountains are made of concrete, and concrete expands and contracts in cold weather. If at all possible, you should move your concrete fountain indoors for the winter.
If you’re not able to move it indoors, check it frequently to see if there’s water collecting in it. You should keep it completely dry during the winter months.
If your fountain will stay outdoors throughout the winter, you also need to remove the pump and store it indoors. Fill, wrap, or cover the fountain with blankets, burlap bags, tarp or other protective materials to help shield it from severe cold. Be sure you have the fountain covered entirely for maximum protection.
The Four Major Types of Air Filters
February 25, 2009
Hygienic air is essential to human life, and in this modern age, that requires air cleaners. There are a few different methods of air cleaning, like Filtration, Electro-static Precipitation and Ion Generation. Air Filtration cleans air through the removal of sub-micron particulate, gases and odors. If you are plagued by allergies or asthma, an air filter might help you. Air filters are the best tools for eradicating allergens from the house. Particularly for those people who are suffering from asthma and allergies, both the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the American Lung Association recommend air filtration.
The ability to remove allergens and contaminants depends on the amount of air drawn through the filter. Factors that affect filter efficiency include fiber size, fiber density, airflow rate, and particle diameter. Air filters may be centralized, in-home filtration systems or portable devices. When the air quality problems exist throughout the house, then a centralized filtration system is needed. Otherwise, portable cleaner may serve the purpose of air filtration.
There are four major types of air filters, depending on specific needs. They are:

An Introduction to Air Compressors
February 24, 2009
Air compressors are widely used among American manufacturers, industries and are often valuable components in automotive functions. Air compressors are typically available as both gas and electrically powered devices. It usually costs quite a bit to operate the compressors effectively, and this can form a large part of a business’s utility budget.
Air compressors are often the single most important source of energy; they are also one of the largest expenses, both in terms of purchase and maintenance costs. They are usually available in a horsepower of three-quarters or larger and can have air tanks with up to an 80-gallon tank. Makes, model and features of an air compressor will vary among brands and models.
The governing body over equipment such as air compressors is the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). An important safety component in all ASME certified air compressors is an air safety release valve. This valve allows air to escape if the tank pressure exceeds the maximum level as required by law. This prohibits accidents caused by excess pressure and the explosion of the compressor. Other safety measures include a cord that can be pulled to make sure the pressure is allowable and that the valves are not clogged or corrupted.
Ceiling Fans ? That Dont Require The Ceiling
February 23, 2009
The trend in remodeling homes is to expand the outdoor backyard or patio into a lovely room where you can entertain. It just makes sense to extend your surroundings to be more useful. Some are going all out and installing outdoor kitchens while others are just getting new patio furniture. If you are like me; you love being outdoors but can’t take the heat. When the air is stifling and still, you just want to retreat into the air conditioning so you feel like you can breathe again. If you want to create a cooler more comfortable atmosphere on your porch or patio; consider installing a ceiling fan. Ceiling fans are fabulous for circulating the air and making you feel cooler even when the temperature of the air is getting hotter. Don’t limit yourself to having a fan indoors. If you are redecorating your patio or just want to entertain more outdoors, you may want to add a stylish outdoor ceiling fan to the decorating and comfort mix. These fans make great focal points for any backyard. There are numerous styles and models on the market that will fit any patio décor. Ceiling fan styles can be broadly grouped into Retro, Traditional, Contemporary, Futuristic and Special. I happen to love warm copper and have decorated my patio with copper lighting and accents such as a copper fire pit and many sizes of copper pots. There are fans that resemble the era of the twenties with a look straight out of the movie Casablanca. Others are very contemporary in a trendy nickel or other new hot metal finish. Some choose to stay more understated with a simple white fan that just blends in. You can also easily find a traditional wood grain look which would be great on the porch of a log home.
Easy Care Of Phalaenopsis
February 23, 2009
Do you have a knack for being with moths? Most people would say, “no way”. Yet, the moth orchids that I am talking about are the ones that sway nicely in the breeze and some of the newer hybrids have a nice fragrance. These moths are easy to care for, especially a beginner. These moths are found very frequently in gardens. These are the phalaenopsis orchids.
Phalaenopsis orchids are the one of the easiest orchids to care for in a home. Their blooms can last up to 3months and there are some of the most colorful hybrids. Like other orchids they require light, water, temperature, fertilizer and humidity. Seems like a lot but it really isn’t
The best light is indirect light. It can be bright but not direct sunlight. If you have a west facing window sill this will do just fine. Direct sun can damage the leaves of the moth orchid.
Humidity is needed for the moth orchids. They actually grow in the wild in humid rain forests. In the warm months it would be nice to mist them every day or two. They also enjoy a bright bathroom.
